Premise

In 1345 two brothers push their brother Jaunutis aside and, at night in the Šventaragis valley, swear the Silent Pact: the land will not be conquered while a Gediminid keeps the sacred flames, while no Gediminid sheds Gediminid blood, and while royal blood is paid for land lost. Kęstutis says the last clause aloud, and Algirdas never forgives him. Across thirty years Kęstutis pays the price in kin and keeps his word, marries an amber priestess by a trick the gods must accept, and buries his brother by fire in 1377. The reader learns the clauses here, so every breach in Book I lands.

Protagonist arc (form at start → form at end)

Jaunesnysis Brolis (the Younger Brother) → Priesaikos Laikytojas (the Oath-Keeper), marked by Perkūnas at the 1351 ox-oath → Senasis Šernas (the Old Boar), the tired man on whom Book I opens. Vytautas is born in ch. 12 and enters Book I as the Son.

Antagonists & outcomes

  • Winrich von Kniprode: sincere chess-player; wins Kaunas (1362) and Rudau (1370) and survives the book (d. 24 Jun 1382). Earlier, Dusemer wins at Strėva (1348).

  • Iron Saint (mythic): grows with each victory.

  • Shadow-Seller: only watching, through a black dog and a clerk with a ledger; no stones (made 1380) and no mask yet.

Threads advanced

Mostly seeding. A: the Pact sworn (ch. 4), the first Amber Debt (Strėva, ch. 7–8), the Pact weakens at Algirdas’s death (ch. 29). C: Birutė chosen. E: the ox-oath. F: the Wildnis becomes the Dykra (ch. 9). G: the Iron Wolves at their height (c. 100), the silver wolf given in 1345. H: the brothers’ bond, the first wound.

Hands on to the next book

Kęstutis alone holds the oath, bound to protect the nephew who will kill him; Jogaila is Grand Duke with Uliana behind him; the Pact is weakened; Birutė dreams of a Black Ship. Book I ch. 1 opens where this book ends. The novel follows the selected earlier-wife genealogy for Vaidotas and Butautas; the historical note acknowledges that parentage is disputed and the domestic ages are reconstructed.
