Premise

The last pagan realm in Europe is held by a Silent Pact its rulers have half forgotten. Jogaila, bought by the Shadow-Seller, and his brother Skirgaila seize their uncle Kęstutis and strangle him in the dungeon of Krėva. A Gediminid has shed Gediminid blood, and the Pact’s second clause breaks. His son has one chance to live.

Protagonist arc (form at start → form at end)

Vytautas starts as Sūnus (the Son), believing “honour and blood will keep us safe”. He passes through the Survivor (shaved, in a maid’s dress, silent; ch. 10–17) and the Tool (the Order’s sword and white cloak; ch. 18–22) and ends as the Traitor of Traitors, who burns his allies’ castles in July 1384 and lights the secret flame on the night of the 1387 baptism. The lie he adopts is “only cunning survives”. The truth he glimpses is that even the Wolf needs a pack. He pays in honour, his father, his gods (a false baptism that kills the amber), his mother’s surety and Trakai itself.

Antagonists & outcomes

  • Skirgaila (the hands) with Jogaila (the will): mortal. Partial victory for Vytautas, then a deal; Skirgaila has held Trakai since 1382, so the villain keeps the land and lights the fuse of Book II.

  • Šešėlių Pardavėjas (Henė): mythic. Goes from Hanulas to Jogaila’s jester to Skirgaila’s stone; ends the book juggling three black stones.

  • Zöllner and the Teutonic Order (behind them the Iron Saint): secondary. Defeated by betrayal in July 1384. The 1381 warning of Dovydiškės came, in the record, from the komtur Kuno von Liebenstein (not from the invented Hohenstein of Book VI).

Threads advanced

  • A, Pact: clause 2 broken (Krėva); formally ended when the Šventaragis flame is put out (Feb–Mar 1387).

  • B, Last Flame: the Sutartis and flame promise (ch. 3); the flame lit in secret at the end of ch. 29.

  • C, Amber Queen: Birutė becomes the Queen (1384); the kneeling amber statue.

  • D, Shadow-Seller: three stones; E: Perkūnas’s claim on Vytautas (ch. 10); F: Eglė’s price (ch. 16).

  • G, Iron Wolves: seven of the hidden nine massacred in the tents at Jogaila’s camp near Trakai (ch. 7), re-formed under Jonas (ch. 25).

  • H, blood-debt: Krėva and the truce in the ashes; I: Ona held by the Order (1383–84); J: the Iron Saint and the White Silence (Krėva Union).

Hands on to the next book

A twice-baptised Vytautas (Wigand 1383, Aleksandras 1386) with Grodno and no father’s land, no surety, and a flame he cannot let die; a land whose spirits begin to go feral. Skirgaila rules Trakai (since 1382) and is Jogaila’s governor of Lithuania (from 13 Mar 1386); Book II opens on him there in spring 1387.
