What the chronicles say [Historical record]¶

Kęstutis, over sixty, and Algirdas had taken the Order’s Eckersberg and Johannisburg in Masuria. Returning, his camp by Lake Ublik (Wobel) was fallen on by a small band of knights coming back from another raid (en.wikipedia; Baronas 2003; the English article says he was overcome by the third knight who attacked him). Wigand dates the capture 21 March 1361, Hermann von Wartberge 13 March; VLE says “near Įsrutė”. He was held at Marienburg about half a year.

What really happened [The saga’s invention]¶

The saga keeps the record’s chance meeting. The third knight is the invented young brother Hohenstein, who offers terms; Kęstutis, bound by the mark on his palm, will not say “I surrender” because he could not then escape. The hidden nine cannot reach him in time.

Consequences¶

Leads to the escape from Marienburg on 11 Nov 1361.
