Gintaro Karalienė (Amber Queen)

Nature

Native Force, and an office, not a goddess. It is the sea’s memory of everything gods and men have destroyed, born of Jūratė’s grief when Perkūnas shattered her amber palace. It needs a mortal vessel to act on land. The vessels come from the Palanga amber-priestess line and each ends by giving her mortality back to the sea.

Type

force

Origin

Native (face of a god)

Note

Spiritual manifestation and office anchored by the amber kneeling woman of Palanga.

Wants

Memory kept. She preserves the stories of those the other gods forgot, and the sea tells her priestess one thing for forty years: “the Queen lacks land” (Book VI ch. 11).

Takes (its price)

The vessel’s mortality. Birutė, the last vessel, “gave everything” so that Vytautas’s sword should never be powerless (Book I prologue, ch. 27). The Queen never raises the dead; she keeps them, in memory and in amber.

Signs & manifestations

Surf-whisper that comes only through amber (Book I ch. 3); foam on the waves; amber appearing in the hands of the lost; eyes gone sea-dark (ch. 11); the sea refusing to drown her and returning her ring three times. After ch. 27 she acts only through amber Birutė touched.

Vessels, servants, claims

Vessels: Jūratė (mythic first holder), Birutė (1382–84). Anchors: the kneeling woman at Palanga (whoever moves her dies at sea) and Vytautas’s pebble. Patron of the Kęstutaičiai and the Palanga vaidilutės. Place: Palanga.

Weaknesses

Once Birutė is spent she cannot walk again, and her reach is only through touched amber. Consecrated stone dampens amber workings; Church men want the statue gone (“remove the idol they call Jūratė”, Book IV ch. 8). A vessel is mortal and her price is final.

Arc across the books

VI: Birutė chosen at Palanga (ch. 10–11). I: frame narration (prologue), the Queen heard through amber (ch. 3), the widow’s eyes (ch. 11), the amber kneeling woman (ch. 27). II: only the pebble remains. III: her voice at sea before Grunwald (ch. 14). IV: Polish clergy come for the statue (ch. 8). V: her silence (ch. 25); her last working, spent on the dying Flame-Keeper (ch. 29); she narrates (ch. 1), and the sea takes the statue.

Native Force · an office, not a goddess

Nature Native Force (Layer II) and an office of grief and memory. It has no hands and needs a living vessel

Born of Jūratė's grief, when Perkūnas shattered her amber palace and chained her to the ruins

Vessels Jūratė (mythic first holder), Birutė (1382-84), the last. Anchors after 1384: the kneeling woman at Palanga and Vytautas's pebble. Patron of the Kęstutaičiai and the Palanga vaidilutės

Wants Memory kept: the stories of those the other gods forgot. The sea tells her priestess for forty years that the Queen lacks land

Takes The vessel's mortality: each vessel ends by giving it back to the sea. She never raises the dead, she keeps them in memory and amber

Weaknesses Once Birutė is spent she cannot walk again. Her reach is only touched amber. Consecrated stone dampens it, and Church men want the statue gone

Traits

The sea's memory. Everything gods and men have destroyed. Not the same as Jūratė: it spread through the sea and became something that is not her any more.

Vessels. Drawn from the Palanga amber-priestess line. Birutė is the last.

Why Perkūnas presses Vytautas. The son of the last vessel carries the unpaid half of an old judgment.

Lair

Palanga. The shore, the sea and any amber Birutė touched. Birutė's full-moon working at Palanga (ch. 27) is correctly timed on the Water zenith.

After 1384. She acts only through amber Birutė already touched: the pebble and the kneeling statue.
