Vytautas before Zöllner at Marienburg

What the chronicles say [Historical record]

After the escape from Krėva (autumn 1382) and the stop in Masovia, Vytautas went to the Order in Prussia. Winrich von Kniprode had died on 24 June 1382; Konrad Zöllner von Rotenstein was elected Grand Master in 1382. The saga’s audience itself is not in the record.

What really happened [The saga’s invention]

In the austere negotiating room Zöllner offers recognition for a price: baptism when and where the Order chooses, Samogitia, and Ona and the children as „guests“ (hostages). The Iron Saint, fed by the prayers of the Marienburg church, watches with steel satisfaction. Vytautas: „Sutinku, magistre.“ The two voices in him split.

Consequences

Caused by the Dykra rescue and the refuge in Masovia. Leads to the baptism at Tapiau (21 Oct 1383).

Book I ch. 18 „Geležinis Magistras“ (Vytautas; Marienburg, winter 1382-83).
