Mėnuo¶

Folk sources [Historical record]¶

Mėnuo is both “the Moon” and “month” (cognate with English moon and month). He is a dievaitis, a son of Dievas, in folk reckoning; the Baltic moon is male. The main source is a mythological daina (“Mėnuo Saulužę vedė / Pirmą pavasarėlį”), printed in Rhesa’s collection and variants: in the first spring the Moon married the Sun; he wandered off at night and fell in love with Aušrinė, the morning star; Perkūnas, enraged, cut the Moon in two with his sword. The waxing and waning are the wound. Other variants have the couple divorce, with their daughter Žemyna seen by sun by day and moon by night, or the Moon’s face disfigured by Dievas or Saulė. No medieval source names him as an object of cult; his reconstructed role is folkloric. The myth is usually read as a law of marital and oath fidelity.

Mėnuo

Mėnuo · god¶

Type

god

Note

The Moon god; night warrior, celestial husband of Saulė.

In the saga¶

Domain: the Moon, tides, the faithless husband. Element: none, but he is patron of Water: the tides and the full moon fix Bangpūtys’s zenith. Force-face: none. In the legend the Moon is the oath-breaker whom Perkūnas cuts; the saga uses this as nursery-law for Perkūnas’s claim and as the amber-priestesses’ picture of Jogaila (“a Mėnuo”; the seducer Aušrinė goes unpunished). Amber washes ashore at the full moon: Saulė’s tears returned monthly by her husband.

The books never name him as a speaker. He is a calendar and a law: Book I ch. 27’s Water working at the full moon is correctly timed, and the saga’s reading (legends §7) makes Vytautas’s false baptism (ch. 19) “Mėnuo’s sin” against his oath. Weakness: none; he is the lesson, not the actor, and he heals monthly only to be cut again.

Offerings & taboos¶

No cult or offering is recorded, and the saga adds none. His only observances are the calendar ones: the full moon and spring ice-break as Water’s zenith, and Perkūnas’s law that the oath-breaker is cut.

Pronunciation¶

MAY-nwoh (IPA [ˈmʲeːnʊɔ]), stress MĖ-nuo. The variant Mėnulis is may-NOO-lis.

Relations

Ally: Aušrinė (the morning star) — Folk: the Moon leaves Saulė for Aušrinė.

Feud with: Perkūnas — Folk: Perkūnas cuts the Moon each month.

Patron of: Vanduo (Water) — Tides set Bangpūtys’s zenith.

Spouse: Saulė — Folk (daina): the first spring.

Layer God (Layer I) · patron of Water, not its source

Force-face None

Offerings None recorded, and the saga adds none

Taboos Breaking a sworn oath (people swear by the Moon when afraid of breaking it)

Signs The full moon; the phases as his wound; amber ashore at the full moon, Saulė's tears returned

Answers

The tides. His phases fix Bangpūtys's zenith: full moon, high tide, the spring ice-break.

A law. He is not an actor but a calendar and a lesson: the oath-breaker is cut and the seducer goes free.

Refuses

Forgiveness. He heals each month, goes back to Aušrinė, and Perkūnas cuts him again.

Costs

The cut. The Moon healed, and was cut again. A comfort after punishment, and a threat.

Mėnuo's sin. The saga reads Vytautas's false baptism of 1383 as his sin.
