Elena (Ona’s maid)

Summary

Elena is the young maid of Ona’s household at Krėva who stays behind: a secret follower of the Root-Mother who lies in Vytautas’s bed in his old furs, face to the wall, while he walks out in her dress (Book I ch. 13). The saga names her and gives her an end; the record does neither. She is the Quiet Sacrifice of the book, and the price Vytautas learns to carry: Ona tells him her name and orders him to remember it.

Status

The saga’s invention

Note

Stays in Vytautas’s cell; executed. The saga’s invention for the name, faith and fate: the Lithuanian Chronicle has Ona persuade a maid to change clothes with Vytautas (Wigand: Ona’s own clothes), but the maid’s name and execution are a 19th-century addition.

Appearance & tells

Young (”jauna tarnaitė”, ch. 13). At Kęstutis’s funeral she walks among the mourners looking only at the ground, with a dried flax knot, the Root-Mother’s sign, in her sleeve (ch. 12). In the bed she does not move; when Vytautas looks back her eyes hold neither fear nor pity, “only a calm offering”. Her last words are “Go, prince; the roots remember me”.

Want · Need · Lie · Truth

Want (external)

To make the escape work, so that the sacrifice is the seed of a free Lithuania.

Need (internal)

To be remembered.

Lie they believe

That a death for the roots is a seed.

Truth they learn (or refuse)

What she gets: Ona orders Vytautas to remember her name; he does, at the end of a list of the dead he carries (Book II ch. 27).

Arc by book

  • Book I (autumn 1382): among the mourners at Kęstutis’s pyre (ch. 12); the swap on the eve of Vėlinės (ch. 13); hanged on the gate the next morning on Skirgaila’s order, as Ona tells Vytautas in Masovia (ch. 17).

  • Book II: the last name on Vytautas’s list of the remembered dead (ch. 27); after the Vorskla Vytautas asks Ona what Elena’s eyes were like, and gets no answer (ch. 29).

  • Book IV (1418): dying Ona confesses that she has sent silver to Elena’s mother every year, through a man at Ašmena (ch. 9).

Power & magic

Tier 0, with a gesture of faith: a follower of the Root-Mother (“Šaknų Motinos pasekėja”, ch. 13) who has no craft. In the sign she carries, the dried flax knot, she has a tier-1 užkalbėjimai (charm). Her willingness is the working.

Record vs saga

  • [Historical record]: The oldest Lithuanian annals say that Ona persuaded one of her maids to change clothes with Vytautas; the maid stayed in the castle and he walked out (Lithuanian Chronicle). Wigand says he put on Ona’s own clothes; other accounts have him lowered from a window in a basket. The maid’s name (“Elena” or “Alena”) and her execution are a nineteenth-century addition (Narbutt) and not in the primary record.

  • [The saga’s invention]: The name Elena, her faith in the Root-Mother, her hanging on the gate and Ona’s yearly silver to her mother (Book IV ch. 9) are the saga’s invention.

Pronunciation

e-le-NA (/ɛlʲɛˈnɐ/), English respelling eh-leh-NAH; stress on the last syllable.

Appearances

Book I: ch. 12, 13 (the swap), 17. Book II: ch. 27, 29. Book IV: ch. 9 (Ona’s Death).
