Pastaba

Jogaila’s line: Grand Dukes of Lithuania and, from 1386, kings of Poland; Vytis plus the double cross.

Lineage

Algirdas’s second marriage (1350) to Uliana of Tver produced the inner dynasty: Jogaila (c. 1362 – 1 Jun 1434; Władysław from 1386), Skirgaila, Kaributas, Lengvenis, Karigaila, Vygantas and Švitrigaila. [Historical record]

Jogaila’s four marriages: Jadwiga of Anjou (1386; one daughter, who died in infancy in 1399), Anna of Celje (1402; Jadwiga, 1408–31), Elżbieta Granowska (1417; none) and Sophia of Halshany (1422), mother of Władysław III (1424–44), Casimir IV (1427–92) and a short-lived Kazimierz. [Historical record] Sophia’s family is the Alšėniškiai. Casimir was elected Grand Duke on 29 Jun 1440, aged 12, and crowned King of Poland on 25 Jun 1447.

Feuds & alliances

Jogaila against Kęstutis (1380–82) and Vytautas (1382–84, 1389–92); Švitrigaila against everyone (1393, 1402, 1408, 1430–32); Skirgaila’s resentment of Jogaila’s ingratitude. Marriage web: Moscow (Lengvenis, Elena), Masovia (Aleksandra and Siemowit IV), Pomerania, Mecklenburg. After 1386 the house is also the Polish crown, and the Lesser Poland lords rule through it.

Fate across the books

  • I: Jogaila, bought by Henė, kills his uncle and agrees the Krėva Union (1385); baptised 1386. II: distant in Kraków; Skirgaila rules for him. III: reconciliation at Grunwald.

  • IV: outlives Vytautas, still guilty; his sons come only from the last wife, and the lords sell their succession for privileges.

  • V: Jogaila dies at Gródek (1 Jun 1434), Henė’s last stone dropping. Casimir inherits both realms, and the Grand Duchy becomes a province of his house, as the bargain’s letter said. [The saga’s invention]
