Pastaba

Volhynian princes, probably descended from Konstantinas; the killers of Žygimantas in 1440.

Lineage

Usually treated as descended from Konstantinas, a son of Algirdas by his first wife Maria of Vitebsk, though some genealogists make him a son of Karijotas. The princes of the Orthodox, Ruthenian elder line, passed over in 1377. [Historical record]

Feuds & alliances

Partisans of Švitrigaila in the 1430s; the Czartorysk truce of 1 Sep 1431 followed the Polish invasion of Volhynia. Enemies of the Kęstutaičiai (1440).

Fate across the books

  • V: the Czartoryski brothers, with council lords behind them, murder Žygimantas at Trakai on Palm Sunday, 20 Mar 1440 (chs. 21–22). The first Kęstutaitis to rule was murdered by Uliana’s sons; the last is murdered by Maria’s grandsons. [Historical record for the killers (VLE), saga for the framing]

  • The Iron Wolf’s last howl rises from the lake as the pack of the dead mourns the prince they were first sworn to.
