Vėjopatis

Tautosakos šaltiniai [Istoriniai duomenys]

Vėjopatis („lord of the wind“, vėjas + patis, as in Žemėpatis) is the Lithuanian wind god. The only early witness is Matthäus Prätorius (1690s); he is not in the medieval chronicles. Later writers add that he is master of Dausos, the afterlife meadow, and that he blows wicked souls into oblivion; those details lack early sources, and Bangpūtys is sometimes made his father or double. The -patis form („lord of…“) recurs in Łasicki’s Zemopacios and is a pattern some scholars suspect of being artificial. His role as carrier of souls along the Birds‘ Way is the saga’s synthesis, not a recorded belief.

Pastaba

Lord of winds and breezes; master of sea-winds and storm paths.

Sagoje

Domain: the four winds, messenger between worlds. Element: Wind („Vėjas tau neš“), zenith Vėlinės and storms. Force-face: none. He carries the vėlės along the Birds‘ Way, and speech with the dead goes through him: a fed vėlė can be asked for help through him (veles).

Book I ch. 3: Birutė’s Sutartis promises that „the winds in Vėjopatis’s lips will whisper betrayals“ to Vytautas. Ch. 11: „Vėjopati, let the fog become his shield.“ Ch. 15: the Five-Voice cry in the swamp is answered, the fog thickens until he is unseen. Ch. 25: the fog is „visibly weaker“, Birutė’s last mortal strength. The Krėva fog (ch. 14) is real fog (Law of Truth), cast from Palanga through the amber anchor at his zenith, since the escape falls on Vėlinės. Costs: vertigo for a minor working, loss of voice (only whistling) for days for a major one, permanent with repeated use. Limits: doubled in caves or still air; the White Silence smothers Wind altogether.

Answers

Shadow Speed and far-speech. Real fog, swiftness and carried words. With an amber anchor distance is free.

The dead. Speech with the dead goes through him. A fed vėlė can be asked for help.

Refuses

Illusion. The fog is real fog, never a glamour (Law of Truth).

The White Silence. Smothers Wind altogether.

Costs

Vertigo. For a minor working.

Voice. A major working costs the voice: only whistling for days, and permanently with repeated use. Birutė's voice failed after the Krėva fog (Book I ch. 14-25).
