Vilkatai (Iron Wolves)

Overview

[The saga’s invention] The sworn wolf-brotherhood (Brolija; each pack a gauja of five to nine), which calls itself Dievo šunys, „God’s dogs“. Folk sources: Baltic werewolf belief and the 1692 Thiess trial. The packs hold the Iron Wolf’s skull (since 1323) and give Kęstutis the silver wolf in 1345. About 120 in 1382; about 40 after the Vilnius massacre (Book I ch. 7) and the schism; 14 at Kūčios 1430 (V ch. 7); a dozen at Pabaiskas, 1 Sep 1435; Pilkoji lies down with the skull on 2 Nov 1449 (V ch. 28). The Flame-Keeper, burned at Palanga in March 1450, is the last (V ch. 29).

Patron Force

[The saga’s invention] Šaknų Motina, who made their bodies. They serve two masters: the Root-Mother, and whoever keeps a Gediminid flame. Rule 2 forbids shedding Gediminid blood, and rule 9 says the pack answers the flame, not the man.

Internal tensions

The 1382 schism split Vilnius packs (loyal to Jogaila’s flame) from Kęstutis’s nine: seven of the nine died in the tents at Jogaila’s camp near Trakai and were buried in the bog; Jonas’s men stayed in Kęstutis’s own camp. The order of the dead after 1430 is a ledger: four taken at Pabaiskas (V ch. 13), five that winter (V ch. 16), then Dobilas, Uosis and Pilkoji. The Order puts a bounty on their hides; the Church hunts them.
