Trakai granted to Skirgaila (1382)

What the chronicles say [Historical record]

Trakai fell to Jogaila and the Order on 20 July 1382. Skirgaila was Duke of Trakai from 1382 to 1392 (VLE), the reward for helping imprison Kęstutis and Vytautas. In spring 1384 Jogaila offered Vytautas Volhynia with Lutsk, which Vytautas refused, demanding Trakai; Jogaila promised Trakai once Skirgaila was settled in Polotsk (taken in April 1387). Skirgaila was Jogaila’s governor of Lithuania from 13 March 1386 (VLE gives 1387). After the reconciliation of July 1384 Vytautas received Grodno, Brest and Podlasie. Under Ostrów in 1392 Trakai returned to Vytautas.

Pastaba

Trakai fell on 20 Jul 1382; Skirgaila duke of Trakai 1382-92 (VLE). The 1384 settlement (ch. 28) only confirms it; Jogaila promised it to Vytautas in spring 1384.

What really happened [The saga’s invention]

The grant itself is backstory in Book I: Skirgaila has held Trakai since the summer of 1382 and says so. In the autumn of 1384, at the settlement in Vilnius’s rebuilt Lower Castle, Jogaila does not give Trakai; he says Skirgaila has held it since last summer and Trakai will be discussed again. Vytautas gets Grodno, Brest and Podlasie. He thinks one sentence he does not say: Skirgaila has my father’s castle. The Vytis emblem is hung over the gate; Ona returns from hostage; Henė greets him coldly.

Consequences

Caused by Jogaila’s retaking of Vilnius and the fall of Trakai (the 1384 truce in the ashes only reaffirms it). It leads to Vytautas’s second flight to the Order in 1389.
