Established on the Council of Constance’s directions on 24 October 1417, seat Medininkai (Varniai from 1470); first bishop Matthias of Trakai (Motiejus Trakiškis, 1417-22), later bishop of Vilnius (en.wikipedia, Samogitian Diocese). It finishes the Samogitian baptism begun after Horodło.

What really happened [The saga’s invention]¶

The saga makes it the end of the Hidden Groves, the gods‘ last foothold bought by Birutė’s sacrifice: the bell over the stumps, Eglė’s snake gone white, the Root-Mother put to sleep (Book IV ch. 7, ch. 27).

Consequences¶

The mirror of Horodło: the baptism begun in 1413 is completed.
