Winrich von Kniprode¶
Summary¶
Winrich von Kniprode (c. 1310 - 24 Jun 1382), Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 6 January 1352 until his death, the longest-serving of all Masters and the architect of the Order’s golden age. In the saga he is Book VI’s mortal antagonist: a sincere, patient chess-player who studies Kęstutis like a problem, wins at Kaunas (1362) and Rudau (1370), and is a worthy enemy rather than a monster. He dies on 24 Jun 1382, six weeks before Kęstutis is murdered at Krėva, so he never meets Vytautas; his successor Zöllner receives the fugitive instead.

Grand Master of the Teutonic Order (6 January 1352–24 June 1382); the older 1351 dating is superseded here by the specialist biography. |
Appearance & tells¶
A grand master in the plain white mantle of the Order who carries his own chessboard across the Marienburg courtyard rather than let a servant jolt the pieces, „as one carries a child or a testament“ (Book VI ch. 17). The game on it stands as it stood three nights earlier: a white queen on the left, black knights by the lake, six white-cloaked men on the shore and a single black king. He has read reports about Kęstutis for ten years and is surprised to find only an old man, broad, tired, scarred, with a short grey beard. His tells are courtesy and patience: he leaves a prisoner a small amber bead because „amber is a Prussian coin, not an idol“, lets the Lithuanian servant Alf speak Samogitian to the prisoner, and answers Kęstutis’s thanks for the chessboard with a calm nod. He knows he will one day lie in the chapel beside the former masters, behind the wall of the cell, and has never decided whether the thought comforts him.
Want · Need · Lie · Truth¶
Want (external) |
The Order’s golden age: the Reise turned into Christendom’s tournament, Samogitia and Lithuania subdued or baptised, the Order secure. |
Need (internal) |
To see that the ‚problem‘ he is solving is a man, and that some opponents cannot be moved by a better position. |
Lie they believe |
A patient player wins every contest in the end: Kęstutis can be broken, bargained with or baptised. |
Truth they learn (or refuse) |
Kęstutis ‚never takes back a move‘: he will not swear what he does not mean, so Kniprode’s best offer is refused, and even victory at Rudau leaves the war as it was. |
Arc by book¶
Book VI (1352-1370). Takes over after Grand Master Dusemer; studies Kęstutis across the border and makes the Reise a tournament of English and French guests (ch. 14, POV chapter); receives Kęstutis, taken by chance in March 1361, offers him freedom for baptism and gets a refusal in the Marienburg cellars (ch. 17, POV); loses him to Alf’s escape on 11 Nov (ch. 18); takes Kaunas on Easter Eve, 16 April 1362, after a siege whose opening date is disputed (ch. 19); at Rudau, 17 Feb 1370, he raises a hand „like a chess player whose opponent has made an unexpected, interesting move“ (ch. 24).
Book I (1382). Dead already: „the old Master Winrich von Kniprode died in the summer“, and the chapter elects Zöllner in his place (ch. 18).
Books II-III. Remembered as the standard against which the Order measures itself: Konrad von Jungingen speaks of the lands Kniprode „could only dream of“ (Book II ch. 30), and the Marienburg Samogitian oak beam is „from Kniprode’s time“ (Book III ch. 11).
Power & magic¶
Tier 0, no gift and no bargain. He commands the Order, whose consecrated halls and sword make Kalba fail: Birutė’s amber goes cold in the Marienburg cellars where he holds Kęstutis (Book VI ch. 17). The mythic antagonist of Book VI, the Geležinis Šventasis (Iron Saint), gathers around the Order’s prayers, but Kniprode is not its creature; his honesty is why he is the saga’s best portrait of a sincere enemy. He pays no magical price.
Record vs saga¶
[Historical record]: Born c. 1310 at Kniprath (now Monheim am Rhein); Grand Commander before 1351; commanded with Marshal Siegfried von Dahnenfeld at Strėva (2 Feb 1348, VLE); elected Grand Master on 6 January 1352 and held the office for just over thirty years, the longest on record. Held Kęstutis, captured at Lake Ublik in March 1361, at Marienburg for about half a year until the escape of 11 Nov 1361; the Order under him besieged Kaunas and took it on 16 April 1362, Easter Eve (the start date and length of the siege vary by account); the Order won at Rudau on 17 Feb 1370 (Marshal Henning Schindekop died of his wounds), a victory credited by the Order to the Virgin Mary. He enlarged Marienburg and founded the Augustinian convent at Heiligenbeil. Died 24 Jun 1382 and was buried in the chapel of St Anne at Marienburg (en.wikipedia; VLE). Succeeded by Konrad Zöllner von Rotenstein (5 Oct 1382).
[The saga’s invention]: The chessboard and the cell talks with Kęstutis; the amber bead left to the prisoner; the invented young Order brother Günther von Hohenstein at his side (Book VI); his raised hand at Rudau. The novel’s precise tournament rules, reports, prizes and administrative policies are invented staging; a general history of crusading guests does not verify those particulars. The private encounters are reconstructed rather than transcribed.
The election date follows the specialist NDB biography, which distinguishes Dusemer’s resignation in late 1351 from the election in January 1352. The older 1351 date remains visible in earlier references.
