Janusz I of Masovia

Summary

Janusz I of Masovia (c. 1346 - 1429), Duke of Warsaw and Czersk, is Vytautas’s brother-in-law through Danutė. In the saga he is the small, moustached, proud neighbour who gives Vytautas refuge in Czersk castle in late 1382, and is open about it: the arrival causes him more worry than joy. He is the neutral ground of the story, a Piast squeezed between the Order, Poland and Lithuania.

Pastaba

Duke of Warsaw and Czersk; husband of Danutė Kęstutaitė and loyal brother-in-law to Vytautas.

Appearance & tells

Book I ch. 17: a small, moustached man, „too proud“, who has learned to survive among three stronger neighbours. He receives Vytautas in the Warsaw castle without ceremony and speaks practically: „Rest; in the meantime we will see what the world does.“ His tell is caution; the Masovian house words, Między dwoma ogniami (between two fires), are the saga’s invention for the Piasts.

Want · Need · Lie · Truth

Want (external)

Keep Masovia out of the cousins‘ wars and on good terms with every side.

Need (internal)

To be a prince who is more than a buffer.

Lie they believe

That a small duchy is safest when it is helpful to everyone.

Truth they learn (or refuse)

That sheltering a wolf costs less than refusing him (Book I ch. 17).

Arc by book

  • Book I (late 1382): receives Vytautas in Czersk castle (his capital until 1406), gives him a few weeks‘ rest and guides to Prussia (ch. 17).

  • Later books: an offstage ally and kinsman; his brother Siemowit IV marries Aleksandra Algirdaitė (1387), so the two Gediminid lines are in-laws in Masovia.

Power & magic

Tier 0. A mundane prince with no gift and no bargain.

Record vs saga

  • [Historical record]: Janusz I the Elder (born c. 1346, died December 1429), Duke of Warsaw and Czersk, a Piast and from 1405 a vassal of the Polish crown. He married Danutė (Anna) of Lithuania c. 1373. Masovian troops under Janusz and his brother Siemowit IV fought on the Polish-Lithuanian side at Grunwald (1410). After Krėva, Vytautas went to Janusz’s court before going to the Order (Wigand; en.wikipedia). See Wikipedia.

  • [The saga’s invention]: His wary welcome and exact phrasing in Book I ch. 17. The record gives only the fact of the refuge.

Tarimas

JA-nusz (/ˈjanuʂ/), English respelling YAH-noosh. Lithuanian: Janušas Mazovietis.

Appearances

Book I: ch. 17 only. Mentioned in Book II (hostage and marriage networks) and in the Book III Brest council context. Masovia as a place: see Masovia.
