Premise

On the night Vytautas dies, the Last Flame goes out in the Trakai vault, and the young wolf who guarded it is left with cold ash, a cracked amber pebble and a silver wolf no one will honour. He wants to light it again. The heirs of the two cousins go to war, Žygimantas wants the keeper as a tyrant’s hound, the Shadow-Seller has nothing left to sell, and a century of unfed dead rise at Pabaiskas.

Protagonist arc (form at start → form at end)

Sargas be Ugnies (Keeper without a Flame) → Ieškotojas (the Seeker) → Žmogus (a Man): his true name is spoken back to him by a living fire at Palanga in 1450, he ages his sworn years in one winter, dies and is burned. Want: relight the flame. Lie: „one faithful man can hold the gods to the land“. Truth: the Pact was the people’s, and its last keeping is memory.

Antagonists & outcomes

  • Žygimantas Kęstutaitis: tyrant, with Henė whispering; murdered at Trakai on 20 Mar 1440.

  • Švitrigaila: crushed at Pabaiskas; dies in Volhynia in 1452.

  • The Unbinding (the unfed dead): burned over a winter at the cost of the last wolves.

  • Henė: unmasked with empty hands in ch. 24, refused.

Threads advanced

All threads close. A: the Pact is folklore (ch. 27). B: the lightning-fire is not the Gediminid flame; the relighting fails because one man cannot re-swear a people’s oath (ch. 20). C: the statue dims in 1445 and is taken by the sea in 1450. D: stones one, then none. G: the last wolf; I: Sofija’s son rules Moscow; J: the four Forces become institutions.

Hands on to the next book

The series ends. For readers going on to Book VI, the last žynys has sung the Pact wrong and the keeper has seen the true oath in the pebble; the prequel shows the oath itself.
