Žygimantas assassinated at Trakai

What the chronicles say [Historical record]

Žygimantas Kęstutaitis was murdered at Trakai’s Peninsula Castle on 20 March 1440, which was Palm Sunday (Easter 1440 fell on 27 March). The conspirators were boyars led by Aleksandras and Jonas (Ivan) Czartoryski, supporters of Švitrigaila, who then returned Lutsk to him (VLE; Wikipedia says possibly led by Alexander Czartoryski). The complicity of Jonas Goštautas is flagged as uncertain by the VLE. He had been Grand Duke since 1432 and had turned increasingly suspicious, executing boyars and negotiating with Albert II of Habsburg in 1438–39. Casimir was proclaimed Grand Duke on 29 June 1440.

Official heritage documentation identifies the Peninsula Castle. The novel’s precise room, weapons, hour and wolf witness are invented choreography rather than a reconstruction established by that document.

What really happened [The saga’s invention]

The last Kęstutaitis to rule dies in the Peninsula Castle. The wolves heard the Czartoryskis’ plan and were too few to stop it, and the keeper decided not to save a tyrant and is not sure he is right. When he dies the Iron Wolf’s last howl rises from the lake: the pack of the dead mourning the last of the prince they were first sworn to. The ice breaks round the island in one circle, from shore to shore, as if cut by a knife, and the castle stands in black water as if built anew. Palm Sunday bells ring on the Trakai belfry.

Consequences

The saga’s consequence is the elevation of Casimir in June 1440 and the council’s rule; Henė appears to the keeper on the ice in the winter.

Dramatisation

Book V ch. 21 “Bajorų Sąmokslas” (Pilkoji; February 1440, Vilnius and Trakai) and ch. 22 “Kraujas ant Trakų Akmenų” (Žiežirba; 20 March 1440, Palm Sunday, the Peninsula Castle; the ice song around the Island Castle).
