What really happened [The saga’s invention]¶
On the longest night by the drifted calendar (12 Dec 1449; the calendar has drifted twelve days from Kūčios; Praurimė’s zenith halves Birutė’s cost) Žiežirba lights an ordinary driftwood fire on the Palanga shore, the first fire of his own in forty-four years (green-blue with salt). The Amber Queen speaks through the pebble for the last time and gives him his name.
Consequences¶
Leads to his death in early March 1450.
Dramatisation¶
Book V ch. 29 “Vardas prie Ugnies” (Birutė’s frame voice; 12 Dec 1449).
