Reizos raiteliai (Riders of the Reise)

Folk source [Historical record]

[The saga’s invention.] Built on a historical practice: the Order’s crusading season, the Reise, brought guest-knights from across Europe each winter and summer to raid Lithuania.

The saga’s invention

Note

Bestiary §25. The saga’s invention. Danger IV after 1387.

In the saga (where the folk are half-wrong)

The Iron Saint’s creatures. Knights who died on Reise in a state of complete fearless conviction, the state the Iron Saint grants, did not stop. They ride the old raid-routes on the anniversary of their death: a column of armoured riders whose mail never rusts, smelling of quench-water and hot iron, who ride through villages without seeing them and kill everything in their path as they once did. They do not hunger; they repeat.

Signs & habitat

Furnace heat in winter; crosses that ring like anvils; the Reise routes through the Wildnis, along the Neman and into Samogitia; hoof-prints that steam in snow.

Before / after the Unbinding

Before 1387 they ride only in Prussia, harmlessly, on Order land. After: the Pact no longer bars them from Lithuanian soil.

Banes, wards, bargains, and their cost

They cannot cross unfrozen running water (the Reise needed frozen ground and fords; in winter everything is frozen). Bog-iron does nothing and feast-day iron feeds them; only smith’s iron forged at a pagan hearth bites, and few such smiths remain. Stand still and do not fear: they see only fear and pass the fearless by.

Danger level

IV deadly (after 1387).

Story hooks

Book III: the Riders strengthen before Grunwald and scream when the Iron Saint breaks. Book IV: Riders on the Samogitian roads as the Hidden Groves fall. Book V ch. 14: they break at the unfrozen river at Pabaiskas.

Half-wrong truth. No folk belief to correct. The saga truth: they ride on the anniversary of their death, through villages without seeing them, smelling of quench-water and hot iron. Before 1387 the Pact kept them harmlessly in Prussia.

Book III. They strengthen before Grunwald and scream when the Iron Saint breaks. In Book V ch. 14 they break at the unfrozen river at Pabaiskas.

Actions

The raid. Ride the old routes and kill everything in the path.

Costs

Running water. They cannot cross it unfrozen, but in winter everything is frozen.

Pagan-hearth iron. Bog-iron does nothing and feast-day iron feeds them. Few such smiths remain after 1387.

Standing still. They see only fear and pass the fearless by. Almost nobody manages it.
