Summary¶

Kalvis (the Smith), leader of the Vilnius packs; holds to rule 9 in 1382, is judged and spared by Vytautas, guards the flame from 1387 and dies at the Vorskla (1399) when the wolves who crossed the Dnieper crumble to ash.

Appearance & tells¶

A large man of about fifty, forearms covered with old burn scars like bits of slag; the right side of his beard will not grow, because the skin there burned (Book II ch. 2). He is called only “Kalvis” (“Smith”): the law of the pack no longer allows him another name. He rows like a man used to hard work, steadily and without sparing his hands (ch. 11). Among the young wolves he is a “father”, a title he does not know whether to take as respect or fear (ch. 14). At the Vorskla his hands are held out palms up and the skin trembles.

Want (external)	To keep the flame that is the wolves’ name, and to keep his pack within the law (rule 9) when it costs him.
Need (internal)	To be judged and forgiven for the door he held in 1382.
Lie they believe	That the letter of the Pack’s Word is enough: rule 9 owed the flame’s keeper, so he stood aside while Skirgaila’s killers did their work.
Truth they learn (or refuse)	That the Word has a spirit: Vytautas spares him, the old Kęstutis wolves never forgive either of them, and Kalvis dies for the man (Book II ch. 2, 26).

Book I (1382): leader of the Vilnius packs; holds the doors by rule 9 while Jogaila’s camp near Trakai is stained, and stands aside. The slaughter is off page.
Book II: carries the ember through the water to the Trakai foundations, kneels for judgement in front of the half-flooded island castle and is spared (ch. 2, spring 1387); rows Vytautas out in the night boat to take the keys of Trakai (ch. 11); POV of ch. 14 (Vilkų Medžioklė, winter 1395-96), a hunt of the Unburned in the Dykra’s edge; goes south to the steppe against his own law and dies at the Vorskla when the wolf-change stops halfway, “with no forest to remember him” (ch. 22, 23, 26).

Granted, the Wolf-Change, outside the tier ladder; a sworn wolf of many years who could take wolf shape (only wolves sworn twenty years or more can). He is the first keeper of the Šventaragis ember: he guards the lodge flame (1387-1399), his ash feeding it afterwards. His fatal limit is the Root-Mother’s own: her gifts fade far from forest, and at the Vorskla the transformation fails half-way. He and eleven wolves crumble to ash.
